IICT Leverages RFID for Better Access Management
By CXOtoday Staff
Mumbai, May 08, 2008 1637 hrs IST

Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad is a premier R&D Institute in India. IICT employs over 450 dedicated scientists and technical officers/technicians and has a well-equipped laboratory and instrument facilities for research in chemical sciences and technology and allied sciences. IICT is known nationally as well as internationally for its contributions both in basic and applied research. Need for a Solution: The research scholars and employees at IICT had to go through a strict verification process as they enter the IICT campus. Guards who were positioned in the four gates manually had to check the identities of everyone entering the premises. This created a bottle neck in people movement where the scholars and employees had to wait at the gates for verification. The management wanted to eliminate the wait time of the employees and research scholars at the gates and was convinced that RFID could be the right solution for this problem. IICT chose Gemini Traze RFID, an RFID product manufacturer and system integrator to do the implementation. Solution: The company decided to install RFID gate antennas and readers at the four gates. The staff were given RFID enabled identity cards. These gates would continuously track movement of people. The RFID cards have Unique Identification numbers that identifies each employee as they walk through the antennas. The system is backed by a power supply in case of power failure and web enabled software tracks and records movement of people across the gates. In addition to tracking people movement across the gates, the system was also used to record employee attendance by taking in the entry and exit time. Benefits: * Employees do not wait for verification at entry gate saving time and crowding at the gates in the morning and evening * The system is also used for employee attendance About the Deal: IICT chose Gemini Traze RFID, an RFID product manufacturer and system integrator to do the implementation.
