  • With the holiday season around, action on the Internet is going to rise with students being at home surfing the Internet and families searching for the best deals on travel portals.

Though, it's a time to relax and enjoy, one needs to remain alert and guard the Internet and mobile phones. F-Secure, a mobile security and anti-virus provider has laid down 5 reasons, why security is important:

    1. Phishing for a good deal

While looking for affordable holidays, many people are misled by online scams and phishing cons claiming to offer great deals. Hackers and phishers design emails that will entice the victim to reveal passwords and other personal information, which can be exploited.

    2. Watch out for "snap-happy" emails

It's natural to upload vacation photos to share with friends, but when a friend sends an email to check out their images by clicking on a web link, get alert.

Virus writers are constantly on the look out for an easy "in" with the unsuspecting public. What looks like a photo email could really activate a malicious bug that infects your PC and possibly turns it into a "spam zombie" or disables the PC while the attachment is opened.

This approach is similar to the recent SPAM/spam (bulk e-mail) wave that contained "funny.zip", a form of Trojan.

    3. Beware of mobile malware

Now most mobile phones becoming smartphones, the urge to remain in touch 24X7 is on a high and not of surprise it's equally followed by the rise in mobile malware.

Malware in phones is spread through Bluetooth or Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). Please ensure that your Bluetooth is kept off while your phone is carried along to the holiday destination. Also install a mobile anti-virus program to protect from any kind of mishaps.

    4. End-of-term surfing

During vacations kids access Internet to download games, movies, music files, etc. Not only are children more susceptible to the usual offenders like spam and viruses, but also they're more likely to be victimized by websites with offensive or inappropriate material.

To protect your children from these malicious activities, users must install security solutions with good parental control features on their PCs -- allowing them to switch to different settings, providing varying access for adults, teenagers and children.

    5. E-greetings

During festivals all of us would like to receive and send out e-greetings to our loved ones via emails and MMS. But, there are chances of these e-cards carrying viruses and Trojans along with them. To avoid being affected any suspicious email or email received from any stranger must note be clicked on.

So, to avoid all these threats while you enjoy the online sessions during the holidays, make sure to update your mobiles and laptops with the best security softwares with round the clock updates.
