In a move to beef up its Internet networking expertise, communications vendor Avaya will acquire Ubiquity Software, a developer of software applications using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) technology.
The deal, worth 74.3 million ($144 million), will help Avaya provide support to network operators and enterprises migrating to all-IP networks, the company said on Friday.
Avaya designs, builds and manages communications networks for more than one million companies worldwide including India. Ubiquity develops SIP-based communications software for service providers, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) around the world.
SIP technology lets traditional or mobile phones work together more readily with applications such as e-mail and instant messaging.
This is the second acquisition in row, ever since Avaya acquired Traverse Networks, to make voice mail easier to use on the road. Traverse server and client software has been designed to let enterprise employees easily retrieve and manage their voice mail on a broad range of mobile devices.
