  • Aperto Networks today announced that BSNL will be deploying its PacketMAX 5000 base stations and PM 300 subscriber units, along with its element management system -- WaveCenter EMS Pro -- across six cities and four rural areas in India.

The six initial cities getting the WiMAX equipment are Kolkata (in West Bengal), Bangalore (in Karnataka), Chennai (in Tamil Nadu), Ahmedabad (in Gujarat), Hyderabad (in Andhra Pradesh), and Pune (in Maharastra).

The deployment will also cover four rural districts in the State of Haryana and is planned for completion in January 2007.

"Over the years, BSNL has installed a high quality telecom network across India and it is now focusing on improving and expanding the network," said Monica Paolini, President, Senza Fili Consulting. "Aperto's state-of-the-art WiMAX equipment will enhance BSNLs network and will serve as a robust platform from which to introduce new telecom services to meet the increasing demand from their subscriber base."

"We look forward to continuing our association with BSNL as it further strengthens the backbone of Indias information society and employs Aperto's WiMAX gear to help bridge the rural-urban digital divide," said Manish Gupta, vice president of marketing and alliances for Aperto Networks.

BSNL had floated the tender for WiMAX equipment in late 2004.

BSNL has great amounts of capital and are in perfect position to deploy wimax on large scale. The problem is how fast and how good, their mobile network is the biggest but the worst in terms of quality but again their DSL broadband is best compared to any other provider including reliance, If BSNL keeps a professional approach and cuts down red tape they can really take India way ahead in Internet Boom just like the Mobile Boom. Godspeed, Jai Hind !

How customer responsive BSNL is going to be is still a big question. Long ago we had a BSNL - ISDN dialup a/c and received very poor service support. Now we have an WAN link - Managed Leased line. Cost is very good, but BSNL need to improve a lot in their customer support. WiMAX would be surely cheaper. But their support will decide their success.

This blue-eyed boy of the sarkar, along with the twin brother MTNL, still lives in the times of the monopoly. They must both be merged, and auctioned off. Pronto.
