The telecom sector in India has been growing rapidly, making the Indian telecom market one of the fastest growing markets in the world. The mobile sector has grown from around 10 million subscribers in 2002, to reach 150 million by early 2007, registering an average growth of over 90% year on year. Telecom equipment makers and software solutions providers to telecom companies - have naturally been attracted to this market due to the booming opportunities available here.
After the success of both GSM and CDMA mobile technologies in India, the stage is set for the next generation of wireless and wired telecom services, to gain ascendancy in India. Telecom companies and cable operators, both are vying to offer IPTV, voice over IP and other converged services. To leverage on these fundamentals of the Indian market, Patton Electronics, a global telecom equipment maker and member of the Triple Play alliance, has launched its manufacturing operations in Chennai.
"We couldn't resist expanding in India. The telecom market will be too big, the local talent too strong, and there is an emerging manufacturing sector - which could rival Shenzen," said Burton A Patton, executive vice president of Patton Electronics and acting president of Patton India.
Patton India will offer system design, integration and support services. The company has three main product lines; network access, connectivity and Voice over IP. Patton India will introduce its entire portfolio of 1000-strong products in the Indian market.
According to Robert Patton, president of Patton Electronics, "Enterprises are increasingly interested in leveraging Triple Play and Voice over Internet Protocol technologies, for gaining competitive edge. They want to see data, video and voice flowing seamlessly over a single network. We are here to enable that and as a member of Triple Play Alliance, we are ideally positioned to offer that."
However, Burton Patton cautioned that government regulation could be the only restraint in spread of VOIP in enterprises. According to Burton, there is no legal sanction to the use of IP telephony beyond a closed user group, so enterprises are still wary of deploying it in a full-fledged manner. He, however, was optimistic that regulation would evolve favorably over time.
Robert Patton added, "Telecom regulations in India have been very mature and forward looking, compared to the US - where technology is ahead and the laws are always trying to catch up. In India, law-makers have typically incorporated regulation keeping in mind future evolution of technology."
