  • At a time when off-shoring to cost-effective geographies has become the norm, extension of the STPI (Software Technology Parks of India) scheme beyond 2010 would mitigate the concerns of the design industry, said Jaswinder Ahuja, corporate vice president and managing director, Cadence Design Systems.

Ahuja lists below his expectations from Budget 2009.

Across the world, the electronics and semiconductor industry is going through a slump in manufacturing capacity, as the downturn has forced the focus to be on utilization of existing capacity rather than expansion. Given that, an extension of the Special Incentive Package for Semiconductor Related Manufacturing from 2010 till 2015 would ensure that India is seen as a destination for chip and solar PV manufacturing when there is a global push for capacity enhancement for manufacturing.

In these tough times, when investment in R&D and design has been affected and when off-shoring to cost-effective geographies is the norm, the extension of the STPI (Software Technology Parks of India) scheme beyond 2010 would mitigate the concerns of the design industry.

While the urban demand for electronic gadgets is a mammoth opportunity in itself, there is also an untapped and vast opportunity for locally made products in the rural market, especially in the area of telecom and wireless applications. This market opportunity needs to be tapped through investment incentives which will not only benefit the industry but will fill the infrastructure gaps in rural and semi-urban India.

We would also like to see more investment allocation for alternate and green technologies like solar panels, healthcare (medical equipment), communications and education.

Revisiting the Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT) provision would come as a relief to most corporate entities in India.
