Microsoft Corp could soon see a new competition in its lucrative Office software area in the form of Cisco Systems, which is considering offering an internet-based alternative leveraging its WebEx collaborative service.
Though Google Inc and Adobe Systems earlier have not met with much success in their Web-based alternatives to Office, Cisco Systems seems quite optimistic.
In an online news conference on Tuesday, Doug Dennerline, senior vice president, Cisco Systems, said Cisco is interested in getting into that area. "That is an interesting space. We are certainly thinking about that," he said without elaborating further.
Dennerline, who manages Cisco's online collaboration products, said the company may develop a service that would allow business users to create documents they could draft and share through its WebEx meeting and collaboration service.
Microsoft's Office division reported sales of $60 billion in the most-recent fiscal year.
Over the last decade, Cisco has forayed into new products including software and video products such as TelePresence and WebEx service that facilitates online meetings.
