  • Somark Innovations has announced that it has successfully conducted live animal tests of biocompatible chipless RFID Ink in cattle and laboratory rats.

The tests were conducted by injecting and and then reading a biocompatible chipless RFID ink "tattoo" within the skin of animals, says the company. On application, the ink creates a unique ID that can be detected without line of sight.

The technology will be initially targeted at the livestock industry to help identify and track cattle and thus mitigate export trade loss from BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) scares. Secondary target markets include laboratory animals, companion pets, and potentially prime cuts of meat.

Ramos M. Mays, Chief Scientist, said, " This is a true proof-of-principle and mitigates most of the technological risk. This proves the ability to create a synthetic biometric or 'fake fingerprint' with Biocompatible Chipless RFID Ink and read it through hair."
