Maharashtra's directorate of economics and statistics (DES) has implemented a decision support system for five years.
The system was officially launched by Jayant Patil, finance and planning minister of Maharashtra, at an inauguration ceremony held recently at Mantralaya, the administrative headquarters of the state government.
The system will provide critical information to assist in better planning of the progress of the state. DES functions as the principal statistical organization for the government and is administratively under the control of the state planning department.
The government has appointed Blue Star Infotech (BSI) as a turnkey solution provider to supply, install, and commission hardware, networks and software. BSI will also develop/ implement data entry forms, analytical reports, and train the DES staff.
BSI, in conjunction with SAS, HP and Oracle, built and commissioned the entire system in eight months - this is the first e-governance project in the state to be executed and implemented within contracted time frames, according to the press release.
According to V. K. Aggarwal, additional chief secretary - planning, "DES-Maharashtra is the first government department to implement such a system. With this new computerized system, information collected at various regional and district statistical offices can be consolidated at the state head office without any delay and the complex analysis can be carried out more easily and with greater accuracy."
Satish Gaonkar, vice president, consulting services practice of BSI said that the company aims to replicate this success in other similar e-governance initiatives.
