In the wake of Mumbai attacks, police chiefs across India have already issued advisories to hotels to take preventive measures that can be feasible with the deployment of advanced surveillance solution.
If the hospitality sector felt expenditure on hi-tech security gadgets and technologies was a secondary need, events of last week should have shaken them out of this misconception. Such terror attacks have raised a concern for the improvement of security systems to act as a deterrent and the all-important first-line of defense. But its not just the hospitality sector that needs to take technology seriously, the government can also show more enthusiasm when it comes to using technology to combat terrorism.
Some of the hotels in Delhi who have deployed CCTVs are planning to implement advancd surveillance systems. However, none of the starred hotels was willing to share information on these deployments citing security reasons.
"We have heightened the security in our hotel. Security is a critical issue and we are in the process of implementing advanced technology and deploying necessary equipment," said Richa Gupta, relationship manager with ITC Maurya, New Delhi.
Delhi has about 100 cameras for city surveillance. Compare this to an almost unknown Chinese city -- Futian, where more than 3,000 cameras have been deployed, and you can see where India stands when it comes to security.
"Today, technology-based systems are able to track each and every movement; it clearly shows non-effectiveness of CCTV implementation on key locations. However, they will not able to differentiate between a guest and terrorist," said the chief ICT officer of a communication company.
