Delhi to Stay Connected with Wi-Fi

The Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) has announced its plan to connect the whole of south Delhi with Wi-Fi.
The IT department of the Delhi government is all set to launch citywide Wi-Fi services to offer Web connectivity.
It has selected MTNL for its ambitious project to connect south Delhi with Wi-Fi networks.
MTNL will connect all major hotspots including Dilli Haat and Ansal Plaza by the end of next month. It will float tenders to partner with technology providers. "The hotspots in the region need to be connected first. The rest of the city will be connected in a phased manner," said a MTNL official.
He said that the consumer will get an application message after logging into the network. He can automatically switch on instant Web access, and can avail first 15-minute free usage service. Bills will only be accepted in plastic.
"It may take more than a month to make all the major areas Wi-Fi connected," said Ajay Pal Singh, assistant manager with MTNL.
Another MTNL official said that this technology is a better option than the fiber optic cables used for Wi-MaX connectivity.
"Wi-Fi is based upon LANs that can be deployed without cabling for client devices. It therefore, minimizes the cost of a setup deployment and expansion", said Shahab Khan, manager (training) for Tata Indicom. This technology is getting acceptance in corporate infrastructures and small-and-medium enterprises, today, he said.
A Wi-Fi setup contains one or more Access Points (APs) that broadcast its Service Set Identifier (SSID) through packets that are called beacons. "The wireless LAN is feasible, and can be hosted in the cumbersome areas that may include historical places and congested regions," Khan said.
Newly appointed IT secretary in the Delhi government, Dharam Pal refused to comment despite numerous attempts.
Also the Wi-Fi deployment at the domestic and international airports in Delhi by Tata Teleservices is enabling air travelers to browse undisrupted Internet. It is learnt that the Delhi High Court is following suit. K. C. Mittal, president of Delhi High Court Bar Association is exploring the possibilities of implementing the e-filing system so that grievances could be addressed over the Internet.
It may be recalled that popular coffee chain -- Cafe Coffee Day, has already installed Wi-Fi networks throughout its outlets in India.
