Dimexon is a Mumbai-based international diamond manufacturing and jewelry firm, specializing in crafting diamonds and jewelry. Dimexon marked a huge turn over of Rs.1700 crore for the year 2006-07.
The firm is a part of Dimexon Group that deals in measurement units (carat and pieces) and has operations in India and China, with a workforce of over 10,000 professionals. It has 11 international offices and operates in 26 countries.
Need for a solution
Dimexon has a manufacturing unit in Coimbatore. Various departments in this unit had unique application programs as per their needs that were supplied by different software vendors. Because of different application programs, there was no integration here. Hence unit used manual data entry method for storing information.
This led to a situation of disintegration and there was no coordination among the various departments. Hence, information was unavailable at the required time, affecting Dimexon's overall production strength.
In addition, firm faced problems with currency handling and statutory needs. Also, majority of workforce were females, which lacked education and computer knowledge.
Some of these issues were halting the firm against the deployment of ERP solution at this unit. "Since the business was growing, we realized the need of an integrated ERP system that can align with company's requirements and integrate our business processes like purchasing, sales, manufacturing and finance," explained Satyanarayan B, CIO & VP of Dimexon Diamonds.
Solution
Finally, the firm deployed SAP's ERP solution to over come its problems and brought at integration of its departments at Coimbatore unit. Before SAP's ERP solution was deployed, the company evaluated programs of Oracle and Microsoft Navision.
"We made it clear that the packages should cover all our business processes and meet the statutory requirements as per different countries, where we are doing our business. The system should be tightly integrated and should have proper control over it. So, we opted for SAP, as it fulfilled all the requirements," Satyanarayan added.
Benefits
The deployment has been very successful for the company. Visibility of diamond stocks improved, stock tallying, and inventory management were boosted.
SAP's ERP improved relationship of customers with the company as the information is now available online. Since the customers were able to gather information about the company, it was able to win the confidence over them.
About the deal
The implementation process started in April 2006 and it took 9 months to deploy the solution. Handling dual unit was not available with SAP system and so Dimexon developed its own system and integrated it with SAP.
Being a multi national, currency handling and meeting the statutory requirements also posed problems. Diamonds are high value items and the server has to be configured in the manner to handle the load and locate a particular piece of diamond. All these problems were sorted out by successful integration with the help of Siemens who were their implementation partners.
The company is in the expansion mode and it would increase the application of SAP ERP in its growth.
