Educational Institutions to get Tech Smart
By CXOtoday Staff
Mumbai, Feb 5, 2008

Hewlett-Packard India (HP) in collaboration with Dimensions Innovation Labs (Dimensions), an education technology solutions provider, has launched 'Campus management solution', to facilitate effectiveness and efficiency in campus administration. Through this partnership Dimensions and HP will jointly bring top end technology solutions to educational institutions in India.

Campus Dimensions - the flagship product of Dimensions is an integrated campus management solution with special features including central database and smart ID cards aimed to optimize resources in campus administration.

Dimensions estimate that with 2500 professional education colleges and 300 universities, India offers a huge potential for campus integration solutions. The company estimates the market size for the year 2007-2010 for campus ERP, as Rs.4000 crore and underlying hardware as Rs.7000 crore. Currently, only 5 % of the institutes in India have an ERP system in place.

The new solution will provide campus-wide integrated information systems covering all functional areas and automate core managerial activities including admissions, academics, examinations, fees, placements, alumni, finance, and purchase, thus augmenting the institute's brand image at the same time improving bottom and top line profitability. Packed with over 22 such modules, the solution ensures integration of administrative functions and better co-ordination between departments.

The solution provides a flexible framework to accommodate diversity in the layouts and practices in different academic institutions.

This collaboration is certainly a welcome step towards bringing technology and automation within the campus of many Indian Institutions. But one cannot ignore the underlining facts and realities at the ground zero, mainly : 1. Education Institutions are not corporates. 2. Marketing efforts are huge. 3. Though there are 2500 professional colleges, most of them lack IT infrastructure and personnel. As a result it takes longer to implement any ERP. 4. Data management for an ERP is a huge job and needs large manpower resources not just from the Institutions but external also. The lack of commitment from Institutions either fails to get ERP implemented or delays implementation to the extend that the initial euphoria and enthusiasm is lost. 5. Most of the institutions are affiliated to some or the other University who inturn have their own rules and regulations and reporting. The ERP should be able to configure them quickly. 6. And many more... A word of caution: To achieve the numbers and to make this project a success, you have to set a reasonable and realistic timeline after taking into consideration the ground realities. Thanks,
