EnergyLogic - Running the Data Center Logically

In the year 2006-2007, the top 3 concerns for data center administrators were heat density, power drop, and availability of solutions. Now in the year 2008, one of the biggest and emerging concerns raised by data center users is energy efficiency.
According to Pratik Chube, country manger, product management (channel) of Emerson Network Power, "The focus of CIOs has now shifted from heat density to energy efficiency. They now want to improve the overall efficiency of data centers, at the same time, they are looking out for solutions that will enable them to optimize their data space."
Green IT is gaining more and more relevance in today's business environment. Enterprises are now realizing the business and environmental benefits of deploying 'Green' technologies. The data center is the heart of the organization. An energy efficient data center can be a huge boon for an organization.
Emerson Network Power, an infrastructure player, has introduced the 'EnergyLogic and Adaptive Architecture' concept, which aims to offer optimized, energy efficient solutions for IT infrastructure.
So what exactly is this concept? EnergyLogic is a vendor neutral approach towards improving the efficiency of data centers. "It not just looks at the facility side but at the overall spectrum, right from the demand side and works around simple cascading principles," added Chube. On the other hand Adaptive Architecture ensures the Operating Expense (OPEX) is brought under control.
EnergyLogic includes practices and technologies such as CPU usage, monitoring solutions, virtualization, and the server management software, which ensure servers are efficiently powered and do not drop their rating power. It also includes cooling practices, enclosure practices like higher degree of perforation in the racks, and practices in channeling the racks in the servers that leads to energy efficiency.
It provides XD solutions like X-treme Density Verticals (XDV), XDO, XDH, and XDFM. The XD solution caters to high density requirement in a data center. It enables the data center to lower its energy consumption, and reduces the footprint of the overall requirement. It's a localized cooling solution and offers cooling up to 25kV of rack load. "The main advantage of these solutions is that in the initial stage it may have some incremental capital expense, but one can definitively recover cost in 1.2 years," said Chube.
Adaptive Architecture as a concept ensures OPEX is brought under control by deploying energy efficient solutions at the data center. It focuses on 3 strong strategies, namely - reliability, scalable solutions, and TCO. Talking about the functionality of Adaptive Architecture, Chube stated that today the role of CIOs and CTOs is not restricted to procurement of IT equipments or facility equipments. They are focusing more on OPEX and the expenses involved in managing the IT infrastructure. Applying Adaptive Architecture concept ensures that the data center gets the solution that fulfills these strategies.
The solutions and technologies involved in the EnergyLogic and Adaptive Architecture platform are targeted towards all the major sectors as it aims to support the upcoming business needs, and includes everything that comes under building block of a data center.
Emerson is going to conduct an EnergyLogic Symposium in the month of May 2008 where all the solutions will be officially launched. However, the company has already bagged couple of customers in the BPO sector, telecom sector, and some major MNC's.
