Chennai based Gemini Communication Ltd., provider of Information technology solutions, has acquired an order from Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (ELCOT). ELCOT is TN's information technology department's nodal agency.
As per the contract, Gemini Communication will provide computers for 6,096 village panchayats. It will man these kiosks for three years.
The project will encompass computerizing village panchayats to encourage IT implementation. It is a part of the state government's e-governance imitative.
The project aims to provide easy access to computers and bridge digital divide. We want to bring computers to the doorsteps of the villagers, said Vijay Kumar, Chairman and MD, Gemini Communication.
The state will digitize land records, birth certificates, death certificates, etc. with this project. The initiative will also help villagers familiarize themselves with computers at the kiosks, under 'Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan', added Kumar.
The system will operate on Suze Linux. The kiosks will have standalone computers, which are desktop versions of Suze Linux.
Villagers will be able to obtain information in English and Tamil. Trained personnel will man each kiosk.
HCL Infotech, Wipro Technologies, Accel, CMS, etc were some other contenders for the project.
