  • Newly appointed minister of state for external affairs -- Shashi Tharoor, is a frequent user of popular microblogging site -- Twitter.

Tharoor started using Twitter to stay in touch with the people in his constituency. Now, his tweets include his experiences as, first, an MP and then a minister of state.

Minister of state for ICT Gurudas Kamat too has a Twitter account. Though Kamat may not personally make all tweets, his back-end team ensures that his Twitter account is regularly updated.

For such ministers, social networking sites have become an extension of their ministerial personalities post the polls. Of course they have stated that no state secrets or policies will be shared with their large number of followers.

    Tharoor and Kamat
represent a young dynamic India, and a new breed of politicians who
want to connect with their electorate even as they attend hectic Lok
    Sabha sessions in New Delhi.

    Even though social networking
sites are banned on all government computer networks, our enterprising
ministers do not let this deter them. Using BlackBerry's and
GPRS-capable phones, they ensure their daily quota of tweets does not
    go down.

    Social networking
gained prominence during the recently conducted elections, with most of
the political parties using popular sites like Orkut, Facebook,
YouTube, etc for their campaign. Some other minsiters who are active on twitter are  Krishna Byre Gowda, Narendra Modi, Captain Gopinath, Narendra Modi, S.M Krishna, etc.

Meanwhile, the common populance is also using Twitter to send their comments to ministers. RunIndia, an online community, recently suggested to
HRD minister Kapil Sibal to use Twitter, Wikis, etc. to connect to students, workers, and employers.
