Google to Protect Users' Privacy
By CXOtoday Staff
Mumbai, Mar 16, 2007
Google would anonymize server logs after 18 to 24 months, as per a new privacy policy introduced by the search major recently.
In a blog posted by Peter Fleischer, Privacy Counsel, Europe and Nicole Wong, Deputy General Counsel, the two said, "When we implement this policy in the coming months, we will continue to keep server log data, but will make this data much more anonymous, so that it can no longer be identified with individual users after 18-24 months."
The duo further said that the company would also work toward designing privacy protections into its products (e.g. Google Talks "Off the record" or Google Desktops "pause" and "lock search" controls). This would entail providing clear, easy to understand privacy policies that help customer make informed decision about using Google services.
This includes designing privacy protections into Google's products, provision of clear, easy to understand privacy policies which help the users make informed decisions on using its products. Each search records includes query, internet protocol addresses (IP) and cookie details.
The engineers are working on the technical details and hope to implement this new data policy within a year.
The company however, added that it would retain the logs for as longer, incase of legal requirements.
