IPTV Penetrates Lucknow
By Muntazir Abbas
Delhi, Oct 07, 2008 1813 hrs IST

With the declining telecom subscriber base in Uttar Pradesh, IPTV is poised to come to rescue of BSNL, albeit initially in the state capital of Lucknow. If sources are to be believed, the services are likely to roll out later this year. The subscribers will have an access to services that will include broadcast network channels, video on demand, instructional videos, movies and games. This service will be accessed through a single broadband connection, and delivered by using IP (Internet Protocol) technology. Through two-way digital broadcast signal, this technology will help in encoding and beaming TV channels in IP format through a set top box, which is pre-programmed with software. The IPTV technology has already been initiated by state-owned BSNL in Kolkata, Bangalore and Pune, as well as in Delhi and Mumbai by Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL). According to industry sources, the telecom authorities are planning to launch IPTV-based service in nearly 100 cities across the country. Services like- mobile television and radio on mobile are also in pipeline. The process for IPTV is on the way and we are expecting a huge turnout for this service in the city , said a UP (East) telecom official. This service may boost the ailing landline-subscriber base as the tele-density (BSNL) in the state is nearly 5.5 per cent. There are nearly 50 cities in Uttar Pradesh that have broadband service, of which UP (East) has more than 1.10 lakhs broadband subscribers. And nearly half of the broadband connections in the country are provided by the BSNL. Anil Jain, Head Broadband, BSNL was not available for comments.

Wish to know if BSNL offer allows flexibility in terms of different compression and access to Internet Video Channels like the YoTube.
