The Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) has urged the central government to allow access to the Internet telephony in the interest of consumers. The association said that the government should implement policy to facilitate the growth of Broadband and IP-based voice calls in the country by ISPs. Sachin Pilot, MoS for Communications and IT has recently said that Internet telephony will combat recession and facilitate the Congress vision for rural development through Internet access.
Naresh Ajwani, secretary of ISPAI, said he is optimistic that the new UPA government will stick to its commitment to offer affordable communication services to the masses. I am of the opinion that the 10-point agenda would find a support to enhance Broadband penetration in the country. The way to facilitate seamless infrastructure is only feasible through Internet access to cyber cafes or CSC-kiosks to cater large population, he said.
ISPAI has already forwarded its recommendations to TRAI for the implementation of Internet telephony, and hopes that it will become a policy under the DoT. Due to its cost efficiency, Internet telephony is an application which will help in spreading Broadband in the remote and rural parts of the country, said Ajwani.
According to Rajesh Chharia, president of ISPAI, the TRAI recommendation for unrestricted Internet Telephony by ISPs will now be cleared and made policy. If calls are made over the ISP s network, local calls could be free and STD calls as low as 25 paise per minute when bundled with Broadband packages. This will be a huge leap forward in the availability of extremely affordable call options for the common man, said Chharia.

by Shrinivas Kudva on Jun 15, 2009 06:49 PMWhat about national security? Will IP telephony provided by Indian service providers include hooks to tap calls? True, Skype already has end to end encryption so any terrorist would use it but still I think it will be better if they implement tracking and security controls for detection of ransom calls, etc. They should also reveal these security measures for greater public scrutiny of the same.
