  • In a bid to improve their operational communications and support air traffic services, the four major Indian airports at New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai have deployed ARINC's GLOBALink data link system.

Transportation communications provider, ARINC, with its regional communications partner Bird Consultancy Services (BCS) has deployed the new VHF air-ground stations making it ARINC's first GLOBALink VHF coverage in the sub-continent.

GLOBALink is an end-to-end data link system that enables air crews to communicate and exchange information with ground crews and airline host systems globally without any interruption.

Commenting on the launch of the new service Randy Pizzi, VP & MD, ARINC, Asia/Pacific said, "Today marks a significant milestone in our expansion plans for GLOBALink in Asia Pacific, and in our ability to offer more customers the benefits of Data Link services."

Data link is said to provide clear and accurate data communications directly to the crew, either via the cockpit multifunctional control display unit or printer. In addition to this, it also stores messages so that the crew can go back and check instructions.

Each VHF Ground Station supports several hundred square miles of airspace and compared with voice communications, data link improves flight deck processes and increases efficiency.

GLOBALink/VHF is the primary technology behind the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) used for airline operational control and is fast becoming popular with air traffic control communications around the world.

BCS is going to provide coordination and assistance in the deployment and operation of the four Indian VHF stations, including 'First Call' maintenance.
