  • Internal cloud computing or building a cloud like infrastructure within their own premises would be more cost-efficient for enterprises than opting for external cloud computing models provided by managed service providers, according to Aman Dokania, senior vice-president, Infrastructure, Server & Storage division, HP-Asia Pacific.

This is because the external cloud model will take time to become viable for large enterprises on the cost front, said Dokania. Although external cloud model has its benefits like synergies due to efficient utilization of resources, space and energy saving, it has not sufficiently scaled up for the costs to be lower than an internal cloud model. According to Dokania, in the current state having in-house cloud infrastructure worked out cheaper for large enterprise size deployments and therefore it made little sense for enterprises to adopt an external cloud model.

HP s adaptive Infrastructure portfolio is built with the view to help enterprises automate their data centers and leverage the advantages of virtualization and internal cloud, said Dokania.

Virtualization was vital for enterprises to move towards internal cloud models, according to Dokania. Dokania said that the virtualization scenario in India was encouraging and this year, a lot of enterprises had moved from just testing the concept to actually deploying it. CIOs should further consider the advantages of internal cloud, he said.

On the question of upfront investments required for private clouds, Dokania said that enterprises would be able to get ROI in months and private clouds would certainly prove to be much cheaper than the external cloud model.

Dokania further said that HP was working with a number of enterprises to help them build an adaptive infrastructure that could be readied for cloud computing related deployments so that enterprise IT could move towards providing the entire IT infrastructure as a service.
