Irdeto Zeta for Digital TV Solutions in India
By CXOtoday Staff
Mumbai, Mar 21, 2007

Intermedia Cable Communication (ICC) and Irdeto have signed an agreement for content security on digital televisions.

As per the agreement, Irdeto would supply smart cards- the Irdeto Zeta Card. The cards will be integrated with set top boxes to ICC. The boxes will encrypt pay TV signals helping operators manage and protect their networks. Irdeto's Flexiflash technology enables smart cards to be securely updated and upgraded over the air, avoiding the need for costly card swaps, required regularly by many vendors, a news release said here today.

ICC's digital TV offering, will feature over 200 entertainment, sports, film and news channels in English and a range of Indian languages.

ICC CEO Ejaz Inamdar said, "Irdeto's Digital TV solution has been tested and proven across the world, and Irdeto matches its global technology with expert local support. ICC aims to deploy Irdeto's advanced content security solution while strengthening its lead in Pune and expansion throughout western India."

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India mandates the operators of Indian cities to introduce digital conditional access in cable television networks. The regulator, backed by India's judiciary, has ordered and supervised the launch of the new generation networks in Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, and Pune was expected to be in the second tier of cities to be ordered in 2007.

As a soon to be new expat in Mumbai, this is important to assure a connection with significant programming I enjoy now in Europe and formerly in USA. The choice this offers will certainly help with transition into India, as it helps to establish a sense of 'home' from the outset. Good to know world class entertainment venues are important in that part of the world -- the market is huge!
