Latest Ubuntu OS Edition to Arrive
By CXOtoday Staff
Mumbai, Apr 21, 2008
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS desktop edition will be available for free download later this week, says Canonical. The organization has also announced the upcoming release of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server edition.
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS promises to provide a stable platform for software and hardware vendors, developers, and users. Canonical claims 8.04 LTS is a good choice for large-scale deployment. This is the eighth desktop release of Ubuntu.
Giving in to customer demands of a longer support cycle, 8.04 LTS desktop edition will feature broader software and hardware support, promises Jane Silber, COO of Canonical UK. Kevin Cavanaugh, vice president of IBM Lotus Software, further reiterates this, "We believe the extended multi-year support for Ubuntu 8.04 LTS makes it an excellent desktop solution for corporate users who wish to deploy Lotus Notes on an open platform."
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS includes the latest, stable version of many core products. It will also include Firefox 3, in the hopes of making it a more secure and faster web desktop.
It's supported with security updates and maintenance for 3 years, so corporate and individual users have a longer upgrade planning cycle. Those who want the latest and greatest applications will be able to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10, due in October 2008, those who prefer longer deployment cycles can stay with Ubuntu 8.04 for 3 years before moving to the next LTS release.
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition can be downloaded free of charge.
