Juniper Networks, provider of network solutions, on Thursday announced the availability of JUNOS 9.0 software, a single-source operating system. Juniper has integrated security services from its ScreenOS software into its JUNOS 9.0 software for implementation on its J-series services routers.
With the integration of security services, JUNOS 9.0 addresses the business challenges of managing complex and often disparate operating systems to secure applications, data, and network infrastructure. The J-series services routers running JUNOS 9.0 software offer network administrators the ability to leverage the coupling of routing and security to manage their networks more effectively and enable them to quickly meet changing business requirements, while reducing costs.
IT organizations are under continuous pressure to secure the network in order to meet demanding and changing application and service requirements. To keep pace with today's rapidly evolving landscape of internal and external threats, the need for dedicated, high-performance security processing is required for all layers of the network.
Legacy networking devices running various services on disparate operating systems not only heighten security risks, they divert IT resources, stifle innovation and ultimately diminish competitive advantage. To help mitigate exposure to these risks, Juniper Networks' plans to continually integrate services into JUNOS software, which enables businesses to reduce the complexity, cost and risk associated with implementing network features and upgrades.
The integration of services from the ScreenOS real-time, security-specific operating system will help high-performance businesses mitigate threats and minimize downtime due to security incidents.
"Enterprise infrastructures are often inundated by multiple, inconsistent versions and releases of network operating systems, which can result in unpredictable security and performance as new features are enabled on the network," said Jon Oltsik, senior analyst of Enterprise Strategy Group.
"Running a single-source operating system across a high-performance network infrastructure enables faster innovation by providing network administrators with the confidence to quickly turn on new network features without compromising network performance, stability and security. A common operating system across the enterprise network infrastructure can further reduce administrative, training and management costs, which translates into lower cost of ownership."
"First Industrial views its network as critical to its success and requires a fast, reliable and secure high-performance network to support its rapidly-growing operations," said Tim Barragan, network engineer, First Industrial. "The integration of Juniper's ScreenOS security services into JUNOS software will help us create a responsive and trusted routing environment for accelerating the deployment of service-enabling applications. Juniper's approach towards integration reduces operational complexity and cost without compromising performance and functionality, thereby enabling our employees to deliver the high levels of customer service that have been instrumental to our company's continuing growth."
The new integrated security services are available on JUNOS 9.0 software for the J-series services routers. As a branch office services delivery platform that integrates routing, security, and other services including VoIP, the J-series services routers offer predictable high-performance and a variety of flexible interfaces that deliver fast, reliable and secure network connectivity to branch and remote office workers. By leveraging the modular JUNOS software with security services, the J-series services routers utilize a single-source operating system that delivers advanced features and services, consistent implementation, and universal configuration and management tools.
Building high-performance networks with the J-series services routers running JUNOS 9.0 will provide high-performance firewall capabilities based on Juniper's ScreenOS, including zones, policies, and application layer gateway support to secure both critical information and the network from external threats and denial-of-service attacks; simplified configuration for IPSec VPN supporting secure connectivity over a variety of public networks, allowing flexibility in network design and the ability to optimize for cost or performance.
Chassis clustering that enables stateful device and services failover with an active/backup control plane and active/active data plane, all within a single system view, delivering continuity by maintaining high availability and systems-level resiliency for networks.
"We integrated our industry-leading security-specific operating system services into our powerful, carrier-class network operating system, providing high-performance businesses with operational simplicity and flexibility to integrate and consolidate routing and security devices," said Mark Bauhaus, executive vice president and general manager, Service Layer Technologies Business Group, Juniper Networks. "This is a significant innovation milestone for Juniper because through this initial integration, security is now an intrinsic part of JUNOS software. We will continue to invest in the innovation necessary to make JUNOS software the underlying network operating system that supports the world's fastest, most reliable and secure network infrastructure."
