McAfee and ArcSight Ally
By CXOtoday Staff
Mumbai, 20 Aug 2008, 1731 hrs IST

McAfee and ArcSight have partnered to provide workflow capabilities for security and compliance monitoring. With this, ArcSight has joined the McAfee Security Innovation Alliance.

ArcSight Event Management and Log Management Solutions will integrate with McAfee ePO to deliver a single comprehensive solution for monitoring the enterprise, managing compliance and mitigating threats.

The initial focus of this partnership will be on the integration of the ArcSight SIEM Platform with McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO), the companies said in a joint press statement.

By leveraging the Siem platform to monitor, correlate, filter and send critical security events to McAfee ePO, McAfee customers can respond with security counter measures targeting affected systems. For example, the systems on a subnet penetrated by a worm attack observed by the Siem platform could be updated with anti-virus signatures, software or policies as a countermeasure.

This integration also combines the compliance auditing of McAfee Policy Auditor with the compliance event archiving, alerting, and reporting of ArcSight Logger in support of PCI, SOX, HIPAA and other regulatory requirements.

It is great to see the market starting to make progress towards better integrated and, to some degree, automated security assessment and event management per this latest news from McAfee and Arcsight. I think there is an underlying risk here, that needs addressing. The approach of building many point-to-point solutions is very much like eating cotton-candy when you?re hungry: a quick fix that doesn?t resolve the real problem. If organizations start to build many of these kinds of integrations into their security programs, they ultimately end up with a very expensive, very difficult to maintain, and very vendor-specific solutions. The approach I am seeing in the organizations with more mature security and compliance programs revolves around starting with an open process automation technology, like Aegis, that then hooks into specific solutions only as necessary to either gather information or drive response. In the end, it becomes the processes themselves that are strategic, not the tools that implement them.
