  • A Canadian company has won $200 million worth of damages in a patent-infringement case against Microsoft. i4i had accused Microsoft of patent violation while customizing XML for MS Word 2003 and MS Word 2007.

i4i s dispute is centered on a way of processing electronic documents that removes the need for individual, manually embedded command codes to control text formatting in electronic documents.. Both MS Word 2003 and MS Word 2007 use extensible markup language or XML. i4i says that Microsoft s method of customizing XML for its products infringes its patent.

In 2003, Microsoft was sued by a software developer called Uniloc for patent infringement. Subsequently, last month, the world s largest software maker was asked to pay $338 million to Uniloc by a federal court.

Microsoft is appealing against both verdicts. Though admittedly, not many people use custom XML while using MS Word, if Microsoft s appeal fails, it could still tarnish their reputation.
