  • NEC Solutions Asia Pacific Pte Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of NEC Corporation, has showcased its automatic border control solution and national identification systems in New Delhi, as it embarks on its solutions business expansion in India.

Among the exhibits that were showcased at the seminar was an automatic border control solution with e-passport. The solution is an electronic passport, personalized with biometrics attributes such as facial and fingerprint data in its embedded chip. It serves as a fully automated immigration control gate. A passport holder identifies himself through live facial and fingerprint authentication at the gate.

Another solution that was displayed was an intelligent identification document used by all citizens to identity themselves whenever and wherever they might be. A smart card containing unique biometric attributes of an individual can be easily encoded and live demonstration of enrolment and live match can be conducted.

The mobile biometric identification solution is a highly mobile and wireless handy gadget that enables instantaneous live identification of individuals on the street. It offers highly valued capabilities for national law enforcements such as street patrol; major political events to accurately and promptly identify authorized individuals, or even at crisis management, casualty sites, etc.

According to Tan Boon Chin, senior vice-president, systems integration group, NEC Solutions Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, "We are ready to deploy our solutions with our local partners in India, specifically for national projects involving the national ID system, automated border control system and e-passport system."

"We have successfully deployed national scale turnkey solutions, and have recently been awarded tenders to implement the e-passport system for Singapore and Thailand," added Tan.

The company has developed expertise in smart card applications to help springboard successful e-governance applications such as the smart card-based vehicle registration and driving license.

This showcase was part of NECSAP's presentation on "E-Governance: Involving & Revolving Around the Masses," an inaugural solution seminar the company co-hosted with its business partner in India, Zodiac Infocom Ltd.

NECSAP signed a memorandum of understanding with Delhi based Zodiac Infocomm Limited to form a consortium that would offer home-land security solutions in India.

Intelligent security is not just about biometrics. It cannot be used uniformly across all locations/countries. India will be a big challenge for these "intelligent identification" solutions.
