The core business application, ERP, from SAP AG -- the German business application maker, may cost more once it becomes fully Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) enabled by the year end.
Today Enterprise SOA forms the catch phrase for the company. Since the basic philosophy of SOA is services and an opportunity for users to deploy softwares at lesser costs, this could be one more reason why users may have to pay more.
Vishal Sikka, CTO of SAP, speaking at the sidelines of SAP TechEd 2007, in Bangalore, said, "The complete enablement of our ERP on the SOA framework would be completed by the end of 2007. This is the result of accelerated innovation over the years."
An analyst tracking SAP AG said the company plans to charge consumers for accelerated innovation that gets incorporated in its offerings. However, Sikka declined to comment on whether users will be charged on number of "services" used in a SOA framework.
The ERP maker had announced the availability of its business process platform 3 years back by the name Netweaver. Since then it had continuously tried to go to the next level by incorporating SOA framework to modularize the applications and integrate them.
The term SOA refers to a loosely tied collection of software applications designed to carry out tasks that communicate with each other. Each application is self-contained and works with another piece of software depending on the need. During a visit to India in August 2007, Henning Kagermann, chairman of SAP AG had announced that the company's entire business suite of applications will be available on SOA by the end of 2007.
As of now SAP follows a user-based licensing model in which it charges its customers on the number of user licenses a company purchases.
