Sanjeev Kumar, country head (IT) of Philips Lighting clarified that they're not really moving to, but just aligning to SAP ERP as a part of their global roll out policy.
The aim, Kumar explains, is to achieve greater synchronization and agility, business service delivery, project service delivery, competence management, and business innovation management.
While the core application will be hosted on a central server, all the global locations will access the application through its Virtual Private Network (VPN) termed as Philips Global Network (PGN).
Detailing the broad modus operandi, Kumar said, "We have SAP lighting kernel, i.e. SAP R/3, which comprises CRM, DIW, and APO applications. This is configured around R/3. Few places, which are not using SAP applications, will implement lighting kernel and in places where the SAP application is already being used, this will be a re-migration."
Termed as a Greenfield Project, the application harmonizing exercise will involve company's 3 Asian locations, namely India, Pakistan, Malayasia, and one in North America will be brought under a single core ERP, which is already in use at Philips' locations in 160 countries.
The company's annual IT expenditure runs to approximately 1.5% of its annual turnover, excluding project costs. The current SAP implementation project is slated to cost around Rs.450 crore or about 70 mn euros.
