Puravankara Migrates from Quadra to Oracle Apps
By Priyanka Akhouri
Mumbai, Jun 08, 2007 1952 hrs IST

In order to integrate the work processes, Puravankara Group, real estate developers of more than 20 years has moved to Oracle applications from Quadra. Speaking to CXOtoday.com, Ravi Ramu, director of Puravankara Projects said, "Even though we were the first to deploy Quadra, we shifted to Oracle because we wanted a fully integrated system which would talk more freely with stock systems, financial systems, and after sales systems." "We faced the biggest problem of broadband and reliable connectivity on our construction sites and battled this problem with the help of our suppliers," quoted Ramu. The solutions have to be fully integrated right from the requisition time to the payment system of the supplier. Before deploying Oracle applications, the biggest business challenge faced by the company was user adoption of the new system. "The company did not do a parallel run with Tally and Quadra and claimed that their courage and conviction helped them achieve this goal," added Ramu. "With Quadra and Tally much reconciliation had to take place." When asked on how the change over helped them, Ramu responded, "Oracle applications helps us to save time, provides us with authentic information, and thereby saves cost. The Oracle deployments done in the last 6 months by the construction company include 15 modules such as general leisure, global consolidation system, global inter company system, payables, receiveables, fixed assets, cash management, purchasing, iProcurement, inventory management, project costing, project management, application desktop integrator, shared database for human resources, and discoverer for key reporting needs. The construction company is planning to implement 3 more Oracle modules - the learning management system, the marketing, and the customer data librarian. The implementations are expected to happen in the coming few months. On the business front, the company has recently started 2 new projects in Chennai and Cochin, and is also launching its projects in Colombo. It is also going to start its operations in Mysore, Hyderabad, and Coimbatore in the next 12 months. The company spends approximately Rs.20-30 lakh on IT. It has a big construction activity in-house, and has 700 engineers.

Big companies thinks that by implementing QRACLE/ SAP they will be happy or their business will be progressed. But in actual fact, where ever the oracle and SAP implemented, they use only one or two module. This also they run with great difficulty after spending 70-80 lakhs. Puravanakara also realise this very soon. Only for name sake they can keep ORACLE in their sever and use some other software for handling their routine operations. Ravi ramu not mentioned how many modules he is using from ORACLE and since how many months he is using this. I am telling this from my own experience. In our company we implemented the same and with great difficulty we are using only the materials module. If puravankara is a success, please send the details how they implemented so that it will be a great help for us. I didn't heared about quadra. So i am not commenting on that. I wish puravankara a success ERP implementation.

From the comments I read below, I understand that all people are after Quadra. May be it should be good product for the constrtuction industry. As an IT head in a construction company I think I have to evaluate Quadra, other than anyother software (Including Oracle). Oracle, I have not received any good feed back from any construction companies in India Yet. Thanks for the feed backs and comments to all

We have had a very good experience with Oracle having already implemented 15 modules across various segments of our organisation like purchasing, stock control, construction, treasury and cash management, sales and after-sales, etc. The scale at Puravankara made it mandatory for us to go for a full blown ERP system and Oracle has been a fine fit for us.

Several developers have experienced the pain in going with the big guns like SAP and Oracle. Very recently Omniyat Properties in Dubai I believe has moved from Oracle to In4velocity I believe. Even Emaar in India has had it with Oracle apps and is moving over to another system, most probably In4velocity's System or another player. If you look at SAP, it is again one of those mamoths that will either make or break a company. Too many examples of large expense with little to no returns - the solutions costs a bomb to implement and further to maintain - that is if it works first of all. Unfortunately, money is cheap for Real Estate developers - they go for systems even without checking whether it will work for them in detail. Here to at Purvankara I believe the biggest motivation to go for Oracle was Oracle Financials. The decision probably was driven heavily from the Finance angle rather than a Sales/Engineering side of things.

I also agree with Mr.Abdul saleem. We are also implemented Oracle 3 years back. till now nobody in our company is using that. Still if some body ask we tell that we are using Oracle only. This is becasue of the Brand name. I don't think for the constuction industry this software is useful.

Guys take a break, dont understand why u r after Quadra? There are many companies which go for new systems as their scale of Operations increase. Coming to your question , How do u compare Oracle which targets Large Segment while Quadra targets Medium Segment, they have their own markets to venture out. Dear CXO Team , Request you to get your basics Right.

Poor chaps. This seems like the beginning of the end of these Quadra fellows. Why is the media picking on them so much ? Is the product that bad?
