  • WAN optimization solutions provider -- Riverbed, is expanding its direct presence in India and has opened a sales office in Delhi.

With two sales offices in Mumbai and Bangalore, the company also has plans to double manpower, and raise it to about six people. It currently employees 100 people across 18 locations in APAC.

Acknowledging there is not much awareness about WAN optimisation in India, Robert Healey, marketing evangelist (Asia Pacific & Japan) of Riverbed Technology said, "Education is required. We are also developing brand awareness. We have also worked with analysts to understand the market. India with a population of more than one billion is a very large target group. We want to expand here as the market grows."

And in that bid, the company along with the IT organization analyses and evaluates current performance of IT architecture. "What we do is talk about pain points, wherever we can help. We ask them to optimize the process in a phased manner. Only when they are convinced, do they extend the contract - which is almost nine to nine -and-a- half out of ten times."

Riverbed that has more than 300 customers was focused on multinational companies so far. "But now the focus is also on domestic enterprises. In Q1, was made many domestic deployments in Asia, essentially in the banking sector, in the areas of interconnecting branches in a metropolitan area," said Healey.  "We see a lot of scope in the BPOs, data processing facilities, and information rich environments. We will also leverage our recent acquisition of Mazu to identify organizations for optimization."

But the company surely has competition from Bluecoat and Packeteer? "For us security and WAN acceleration go hand in hand.  Security is more than web proxy that Blue Coat does. Security these days is UTM (that we offer). Blue coat offers only a couple of those components," said Healey.
