  • SMC Networks, a leading technology provider of LAN hardware and broadband connectivity devices, has announced the launch of an all-in-one travel device, SMC Wireless Travel Voice Gateway (SMCWTVG).

The new travel device is compact, versatile and integrates the functions of wireless gateway and VoIP technology into it. Users can select need - based functions in different networking environments and can also use RJ-11 voice interface for VoIP calls and life line function.

SMCWTVG can turn a hotel room into a hot spot where one can receive private wireless connectivity. Built-in features like, Network Address Translation, SPI Firewall and VPN pass-through helps in constructing a secure network. While using the public hotspot network, it enhances security through Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 and Wireless Equivalent Privacy encryption. Also the wireless SSID broadcast on and off capability and MAC address filtering serves as an additional safeguard.

The internal antenna and built-in 802.11b/g module allows the new device to be compatible with IEEE 802.11g and 802.11b standards. The device can be operated in access point, wireless client or repeater mode and includes FXS and FXO interfaces with RJ-11 connectors. Low cost VoIP calls can be made when an analog telephone is plugged into the device through FXS interface. The FXO interface can also be connected to PSTN for regular telephone calls or lifeline function.

Jimmy Goh, VP, Sales & Marketing, SMC Networks said, "The combined VoIP solution with secured networking capability is ideal for today's mobile professional who frequently make calls on the move or in an LAN environment."

I needed to share a comment on "combined VoIP solution with secured networking capability" as claimed by the Vendor. It works/can work on Access Layer and is secure and backward compatible(claimed by the vendor). But this is 1 and the only issue related to Wireless Security. WEP and WPA have incompatible standards set which still remains to be a challenge for backward compatability (with respect to security).
