SMC Networks has announced the shipping of its newest Gigabit workgroup switch; the 28-port TigerSwitch 1000 (SMC8728L2). It is designed to turn unmanaged data networks into intelligent, multimedia-rich converged Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructures with performance advances and economic benefits.
The TigerSwitch 1000 (SMC8728L2) will provide 24 RJ-45 plus four SFP ports in an efficient single chip switching solution. The technology used will allow it to operate 28 channels simultaneously, while maintaining full Gigabit wire-speed performance on each channel. These switches have also got the intelligence to recognize services to enable convergence into a single and efficient multimedia-aware infrastructure added SMC.
The features offered by both 28 and 48-port TigerSwitch 1000 (SMC8728L2 and SMC8748L2) switches will help networks move to the next level of performance, while slashing operating costs at the same time.
SMC claimed that many networks today are unable to distinguish between voice, video and data Internet Protocol (IP) traffic thus necessitating separate, dedicated data and voice networks. This family of switches is likely to be a catalyst for rapid acceleration in replacement of Private Branch Exchange along with IP telephones in businesses, among other advances.
SMC added that security is of paramount importance in today's networks space. The new switches deliver with ACLs and 802.1x, which are for secure network access, and SSH, SSL/HTTPS for secure management. They are enabled by RADIUS and TACACS+. Flexible Layer 2/3/4 traffic prioritization and rate-limiting will enable Quality of Service across the network, and network segmentation will be provided by port and tag-based VLANs.
This Ethernet switch ( available in both 48-port and the new 28-port versions), will bring a Layer 2 management feature set encompassing Spanning Tree, VLANs and link aggregation (LACP) that supports trunking of 10G ports. Built for robust workgroup and backbone switching, the SMC8748L2 and SMC8728L2 have the flexibility to allow for upgrades to more advanced features.
The new TigerSwitch 1000 28-port switch (SMC8728L2) and the TigerSwitch 1000 48-port switch (SMC8748L2) with optional uplinks and redundant power supplies are available now.
The 28-port SMC8728L2 has an MSRP of $1299.99 while the 48-port SMC8748L2, released last year is priced at $1999.99 MSRP.
The new Layer 2 28-port Gigabit Ethernet switch with two 10 Gigabit uplinks for future upgrade options is available now, at an MSRP of $1299.99 (58,4305 Approx.).
Company distributors in India confirmed availability on enquiry depending on requirements for individual enterprises.
