Smart Grid to Minimize Transmission Loss at NDPL
By CXOtoday Staff
Mumbai, Sep 05, 2008 1256 hrs IST
North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) will use the smart grid to minimize transmission losses below 10% in the next three to seven years. A joint venture between Tata Power and the Delhi government, NDPL distributes electricity across North and North Western part of Delhi.
The current transmission losses stand at 18 percent. The smart grid technologies will reduce the loss to 10 per cent, said Reji Pillai, head (Energy and Utilities Industry) for IBM India. IBM is providing the technology to NDPL.
The national average for transmission loss is 35 %.
As per the partnership, NDPL became a member of the IBM-led Intelligent Utility Network coalition, which aims to use technology for improving operational efficiency, reducing network losses and ensuring reliable power to consumers.
"India's energy demand is growing rapidly and it is imperative to ensure a robust distribution network by adopting latest technologies to sustain this. By being a part of the coalition, we would be engaging in a strategic effort to develop and deploy IUN solutions to enhance the efficiency and reliability of our utility operations," said Sunil Wadhwa, CEO and executive director NDPL.
The coalition which includes seven utility firms from North America, the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific regions would collaborate to create solutions, according to a statement.
