Smart Metering Comes to India
By CXOtoday Staff
Mumbai, Jul 9, 2008
HCL Infosystems has tied up with Echelon Corporation to bring the latter's networked energy services (NES) advanced metering systems to India.
HCL will market the system to utility companies. The system makes the energy grid efficient and helps utilities to implement direct load control and demand/response programs. It limits energy consumption during times of peak demand, and detects and reduces cases of meter tampering and energy theft.
George Paul, executive vice president of HCL Infosystems said, "The system is beneficial to both grid operators and end-users, making it an ideal solution for the fast-changing needs of India."
Frits Bmggink, senior vice-president (Utility Solutions) of Echelon Corporation said, "With over a 100 million meters and significant energy challenges, India represents an exciting opportunity for advanced metering systems."
Through the use of standards-based power line networking technology, multiple NES meters can share a single IP connection. This will help to drive down the per-point connection cost and enable the system to easily and cost-effectively incorporate new wide area networking technologies over time, a press release said.
