  • If you thought it's only the vehicular traffic that throws puffs of pollution on your face, think again. The innocuous-looking computer in your living room can also be extremely nasty when it comes to spreading deadly digital dust. Estimates suggest that the amount of greenhouse gases that computers emit annually in - say, the USA - is equivalent to that of 2.7 million cars. That's not all. Most computers waste almost half the energy that they consume because they keep guzzling it even when they're sitting idle or resting in the sleep mode. The impact is equally threatening for consumers and enterprises in India.

You must not worry, though. Before these power-hungry machines go from darlings to dogs in your eyes, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy have come to your rescue. Effective from July 20, the EPA's Energy Star 4.0 energy-efficiency specifications urge computer manufacturers to use more energy-efficient power supplies in their systems. When followed, the new standard would make computers over 60% more efficient in terms of power consumption. This will help individual tech users and enterprises save enormous operating costs being incurred on electricity usage. And the compliant systems would also prevent the emission of ozone-depleting greenhouse gases that pollute the environment.

An array of products from major computer vendors like HP, Dell, Lenovo, and others have already got Energy Star certification.

In the current phase, the focus of EPA norms is to save energy when computers are in the idle state. However, the next phase will take care of power conservation even when the machines are working actively.

While Energy Star-labeled machines will soon be available in India, users - particularly enterprise CFOs - can look for cost saving options on their new systems deployments.
