  • Symantec Corp. has announced two new additions within its Veritas Server Foundation product family i.e., Application Director and Patch Manager to transform Data Center Automation (DCA) capabilities.

Application Director will enable customers define an application's run-time requirements, such as its CPU and memory needs, network and storage connectivity, and dependencies across internal application components and tiers.

Users can create and enforce policies based on requirements to control applications running across heterogeneous physical and virtual environments. It enables them to maximize server utilization, increase application availability, and also respond to changes in application workloads.

On the other hand, the Patch Manager adds management and distribution functionality for an existing operating system and application provisioning capabilities of Veritas Server Foundation.

Currently, Application Director is supporting Solaris Zones from Sun, VMware ESX server from EMC, and AIX Micro-partitions from IBM. Symantec plans to extend this coverage to support virtual machine platforms across all major operating systems.

"As data center management becomes more complex, IT managers struggle to find the right tools to automate business system administration," said Donna Scott, VP, Gartner, Inc.

Veritas Server Foundation from Symantec is available. Licensing fees start at $300 per CPU for each managed server. All Server Foundation components can be purchased separately or as part of a Server Foundation bundle.
