Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), along with its government-focused subsidiary CMC, plans to bid for projects worth approx Rs 5,000 crore to set up the country's unique citizen database.
CMC's expertise on the biometric front works favourably for TCS, which won the Rs 1,000-crore e-passport project last year working with CMC.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will rely heavily on biometric and fingerprint information of the country s 1.2 billion citizens to create the database.
CMC recently implemented a project for the Chattisgarh government involving use of fingerprinting devices, along with other technologies, to establish the identity of a person and provide services such as issue of birth and death certificates through citizen service centres.
TCS, too, has worked on similar projects with CMC in the past and this is a big advantage for the company. According to experts, capability is not just about having the technology to do it, but also the experience and the track record in the government sector.
Since its acquisition eight years ago, CMC and TCS have worked together on major mission-mode projects such as the MCA (Ministry of Company Affairs) e-governance project and SWAN (state-wide area network) projects in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar.
However, TCS faces tough competition in the form of IBM, Wipro and Infosys who are already preparing solutions to bid for the UID project.
