Technological challenges cropping up within an enterprise can often hamper the productivity of the business. To overcome these challenges, CIOs plan to deploy different types of solutions. Excerpts from CXOtoday.com reveal the varied needs and plans of top executives.
Srinivas Sagi, CIO of Maytas, an infrastructure and property development group:
Want: A deployment was needed to help the company provide real time data on inventory, sales, expenses, cost, budgets, and other operational information. Maytas wanted an integrated and scalable system. There was also a need to handle the recruitment in the tight labor market, and to maintain customer relationship.
Plan: This year, the company has estimated to spend about Rs.4 crore for the coming and the ongoing projects. Maytas implemented JDE for future growth and to avoid any specific issues. The company went through some change management programs and invested time in training. Wherever the company found gaps that JDE could not address, they mapped out their process. Maytas updates itself about the best practices in the industry, and also educates the users on how technology can help them. The company is looking at e-commerce, knowledge, and supply chain management for future deployment.
Ravi Ramu, director of Puravankara Projects, real estate developers:
Want: Puravankara wanted a fully integrated system, which would talk freely with stock systems, financial systems, and after sales systems. It required a solution to save time, provide authentic information, and thereby save cost.
Plan: Puruvankara planned to implement 3 more Oracle modules- the learning management system, the marketing, and the customer data librarian. Recently it started 2 new projects in Chennai and Cochin, and is launching its projects in Colombo. It is also going to start its operations in Mysore, Hyderabad, and Coimbatore in the next 12 months.
Sandeep Mehra, CEO of Vcare Call Centre India - a 100% subsidiary of Call Centres India (CCI):
Want:Vcare wanted a robust, secure and scalable infrastructure for supporting their inbound and outbound calling process. The company wanted a solution superior to the traditional Time Division Multiplexing (TDM based offering). They had to have a cost effective solution, which would meet the ever-changing process requirements and co-ordination that is faced by SMB segment-based clients. Exploring Cisco system's full functionality has been a big challenge for the company. Effective correspondence and communication is the most common HR issue, as disclosed by Vcare.
Plan: The company has implemented Cisco IP Contact Centre (IPCC) solution and is using Cisco Call Manager, Electronic Private Branch Exchange (EPBX), Cisco Interactive Voice Response (IVR), and Cisco Unity Voicemail. Cisco's solution surpassed the TDM-based offering. The company's estimated IT budget for this year is about US $250 thousand. It is looking to deploy these solutions across multiple cities in India.

by chanakya on Jul 05, 2007 09:48 AMA CIO is often carried away by the technologies changing their hues and apps very frequently, rather than fully understanding the existing and the future needs of the company as a whole and then zeroing in for a customized solution. However, this seldom takes place and IT upgrades and patch ups rule the roost.
