Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), India's largest state-owned telecommunications company, is planning to increase broadband penetration and 3G offerings. BSNL has started putting up infrastructure in rural region to increase penetration.
Siddhartha Behura, secretary of DoT said, "BSNL is envisaged to provide 20 million broadband connections by 2010 although the penetration is comparatively low. The spectrum for 3G and WiMax is already out, and we expect that it should be implemented properly.
With the deployment of UTStarcom's ADSL 2+ technology, BSNL is said to offer a speed of more than eight mega bits per second (mbps). In addition, it will provide BSNL customers with value added services (VAS) that include Video on Demand (VoD) Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
The company has already deployed its NetRing multi service optical transport solution products for the aggregation of DSL traffic on BSNL's network. According to a UP (East) official, the infrastructure is almost ready, but the low turnaround of consumers, as well as basic necessities, including power and PC are the areas that need to be addressed.
Mobile penetration in semi urban and rural areas has grown with private players seizing the opportunities. The state-owned BSNL has plans to start 3G service large cities where somewhere in mid 2009 through equipment installation with capabilities to serve more than five million customers.
"Cost-effective solutions from device and PC manufacturers should be offered in order to boost Internet penetration," he said. Behura said that ministry is looking to give subsidies to rural areas. According to him, India is giving tough competition to developed countries in the telecom space.
India has emerged as one the fastest growing telecom market place, with nearly 10 million new subscribers adding each month. BSNL has 13% of market share, while Bharti Airtel has taken a lead with more than 24.5% of the market share.
The 3G rollout is expected to provide edge to BSNL and may help to facilitate customer base. The BSNL is said to target high-end users in an initial phase, taking a lead among privately-held telecom players. This technology allows high-speed data access, Web browsing, and content download that include music and video at a faster rate.

by chanakya on Nov 24, 2008 01:16 PMBoth MTNL as well as BSNL need a thorough change in their attitude towards the markets in general and the individual subscriber in particular. If they continue their behavior of a municipality clerk, billions of the nations will go down the drain together with the scarce resources. The nation can hardly afford it.
