Windlas Biotech To Deploy ERP Solution
By Praveen Kurup
Mumbai, Nov 7, 2006

Dehradun-based Windlas Biotech Ltd is currently deploying a new ERP solution called B2B PHARMAVISION.

The new system will replace a few legacy applications running on old Foxpro and SQL Server databases. The applications were primarily used for inventory/ sales management. The company was also using Tally to manage its accounts.

Manoj Windlas, one of the executive directors of the company, is directly overseeing the project.

Targeted at the pharma sector, B2B PHARMAVISION is an ERP solution based on Microsoft Dynamics NAV (formerly Navision) and was developed by Hyderabad-based B2B Software Technologies Ltd. in May 2006.

Before zeroing in on B2B Softech, Windlas evaluated few other MS NAV implementers and also some solutions like Ramco and Oracle.

The biotech firm started talking to the current implementer around August this year, and the project was flagged off on 26th September. Initially a team headed by Pawan Kumar, functional lead, B2B Softech mapped out the requirements and customization details.

According to C. K. Srikanth, product consultant with the implementor, "Roughly 80% of the requirements is readily met by the standard NAV framework available within B2B Pharma. These include standard modules such as finance, sales and purchase management, inventory control, manufacturing, etc."

He also informed that the remaining 20% functionality is currently being developed and incorporated into the product by B2B softech. These include modules for loan licensing, assay management, yield management and various standard derivative practices such as material destruction. The final implementation will also include significant reporting capabilities for these new modules.

While B2B Softech is working on a final pricing strategy for the product, the current implementation of B2B Pharmavision at Windlas is being done at a bulk pricing of about Rs.20 lacs.

This would totally depend on the company's clarity on its IT road map. A well phased IT road map would help the organization to effectively handle the existing momentum and sustain its future growth strategies. ERP is just part of this IT road map. Having ERP system in place does not ensure straight away success but a clarity on where ERP would fit in , in a SMB's business road map and thus enabling a more robust IT landscape would be the key factor.

With the booming economy and the simplified government policies, the vision for any SMB is clear. i.e.) GROW & KEEP GROWING. So the SMBs are swiftly marching forward from Small to Medium to Big. In the above scenario, most of the SMBs are looking forward to improve the business and operational efficiency through computerization. When they are looking forward to address these issues with a Transaction Processing System, which not only should address these needs. But the ERP application needs to handle the following road blocks to delver value to SMB customer, they are 1) Less IT savvy top management 2) Users are not computer literate 3) Interested in generation of MIS non adherence to processes 4) No established IT / MIS / EDP team 5) Not willing to invest in IT infrastructure, treating this as luxury rather than necessity If an ERP application addresses these requirements of SMB then it will be an early mover in this space. Is there any ERP available like this at present?
