  • The release date for the next version of the world s most widely used operating system has been announced. Windows 7, the latest OS from Microsoft, will be available to public on October 22, 2009.

Windows 7 comes nearly three years after its much criticized predecessor Windows Vista and Microsoft will be hoping  to get a better reception with Windows 7 come October.

"As we ha ve said many times, quality is our primary goal," said Steve Guggenheimer, corporate VP (OEM division) of Microsoft. "We have received great feedback from our partners who are looking forward to offering Windows 7 to their customers in time for the holidays."

In addition to this, Guggenheimer said Microsoft will make available an upgrade option, so partners can offer customers the ability to purchase a Windows Vista-based PC and install Windows 7 when it is ready.

The actual start date for the program will be announced when it is ready for consumers, and partners are ready to provide details to customers.

Microsoft said several OEMs have announced plans to issue new small notebook PCs designed for the Windows 7 OS.
