  • Ashok Chavan, Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, called for closer co-operation between the government and the IT industry

Chavan was speaking during the inauguration ceremony of the 18th Nasscom India Leadership Summit (NILF), for which he was the guest of honour. I thank Nasscom for choosing Mumbai as the permanent venue for the NILF. This further reiterates the fact that Mumbai is for all Indians, he said.

Chavan promised complete support to the IT industry in all initiatives in the state and also asked Nasscom and other IT organizations to come forward with their needs, difficulties, and suggestions. I agree that there are a lot of things that need to be changed in e-governance, public health, and some other areas. The industry and the government needs to work together to ensure the benefits of IT reach out to the masses. For our part, we have started certain initiatives. For example, IAS & IPS officers now have e-governance performance as a part of their KRA appraisals, Chavan said.

Speaking further on his plans for the state, the chief minister said he wants government offices even at the taluka level to be connected to district offices which in turn would be connected to the HQs in Mumbai. Currently, we have biometric systems in Mantralaya, we will now try and take this to other district offices too, he said.

He also asked Nasscom to help IT move to other part of the states. Said Chavan, It seems the attendance of government officials at the Nasscom summit is very low. We need to change this. Today, two out of the seven top IT centers in the country are in Maharashtra (Mumbai & Pune), we now need to develop other cities like Nagpur, Nashik, Aurangabad, etc.
