England-based Netcraft - an Internet services company, has released an anti-phishing toolbar that provides detailed information about the websites you are visiting at all times to help users validate fraudulent URLs.
The Netcraft Toolbar uses Netcraft's enormous databases of website information to display all the attributes of each site a user visits on the Web, including the sites' hosting location, country, longevity and popularity.
Some of the key features of the toolbar include display of sites' hosting location at all times. For e.g. the main online banking site of a large US bank is unlikely to be hosted in the former Soviet Union.
Moreover, once a user reports a phishing URL, it is blocked for other community members subsequently accessing it. It also natively traps cross-site scripting and other suspicious URLs containing characters, which have no common purpose other than to deceive.
Netcraft supervisor validation is used to contain the impact of any false reporting of URLs. It also displays browser navigational controls (toolbar & address bar) in all windows, to defend against pop up windows, which attempt to hide the navigational controls to disguise location. It also coexists with Google and other toolbars.
Currently the toolbar is only available for IE but a Firefox version is under development. The toolbar can be downloaded from here.
