Red Hat and Tally will be working jointly to make Tally, a popular accounting software package available on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, according to an announcement made by Red Hat today.
According to the company, since Linux is less vulnerable to viruses, users' data would be more secure. This is in addition to the traditional benefits of performance, manageability and lower total cost of ownership.
Speaking on the occasion Matthew Szulik, CEO - Red Hat, said, "Tally is the most widely used business solutions software in India. This is a defining milestone in desktop computing and will definitely change the way Indian SMEs consume technology."
He further added, "Application availability on the enterprise Linux platform will be the next driving force for Linux adoption."
The Red Hat-Tally bundle will be available through the partner ecosystems of both companies. Both companies will work together to train their respective partners on the new technology. The companies will also jointly promote a support center to address the support requirements.

by Sundaresan on Feb 15, 2005 04:52 PMThis is a reply to "Solutions Provider" (who has not even given the name). What is your affiliation to Tally? If you are a Tally Reseller, I don't want to reply you. The so called solutions provider, let me tell you this. I have working experience of 13 years in India and am basically a chartered accountant with additions of law and IT to my side. I have worked in SAP, Oracle Apps, besides many mid-range ERP solutions. Tally is also to my kitty. Don't try to teach me how the indian industry and business houses work. If you tell this fact that one business house implemented SAP and then went back to Tally, people will laugh at you. This shows the reluctance, lack of capability, inefficiency, etc., on the part of the organization which implemented SAP and then went back to Tally. Please read the article first and then comment.

by Sundaresan on Feb 10, 2005 11:09 PMIts a news that Tally has been widely used as a Business Solutions Software in India. Mr. Mathew, Tally has been used only as an accounting package so far. May be the future versions of Tally could be used for other purposes. First let the Tally Solutions to make it as Database Oriented one. Then we can think of linux support and other niche features.

"Tally is not a Business Solutions Software?" Sundaresan has probably no idea of what Indian businesses are all about. Tally is the lifeline of millions of small setups throughout the country. I know of a mid-tier organization that is still using Tally even after they spent a bomb on purchasing and implementing SAP !!!!! This is an amazing move. No more embarassment for PSUs and government agencies who were running pirated copies of Windows behind closed doors. Install Linux without disturbing your payroll, tax , etc. Ah yes, Mr. Sundaresan, lets see how your "Business Solutions Software" fares when it comes to calculating VAT. Im sure you are calling Tally right now .......

by Sarada Prasad M on Sep 19, 2006 05:43 PMFor small business firm to purchase Redhat Enterprise is not a small thing, so what should be the solution for user, who are happy with any old linux server like fedora 3/4. And also people are happy with the free linux provided by the PCQUEST megazine. So, we can not suggest them to purchase or invest on Redhat.

by Manoj on Feb 19, 2005 11:56 AMGuys this is a simple business move by Tally and Red Hat. Let us also be very clear that if it works in Red Hat, does not mean any end user can make it run on any other Linux distribution. Secondly the issues which will come up may not be with Tally but can come up as far as usage of Red hat on the desktop is concerned. This is a good success for Red Hat.

-
by Manik Ahuja on Feb 11, 2005 02:56 PMFantastic job done, my congratulations to the RedHat team for getting this rolling. Does this mean that Tally has gone Open Souce (Which I dont think would have happenned) and secondly does it imply that it can now run on any Linux or only RedHat Enterprise Linux. I always thought Linux was everything to do with freedom and not tying you down to a particular vendor. Can anyone try to run it on Debian, Suse or for that matter any other Distribution.

Re:

Tally could go Open Source by adopting a lesser GPL licensing policy. As regards to your second issue, that can only be realised if and when the product is available in the market. Using standard library calls it is possible to make it Linux ready across all Linux OS. Question would remain on the version of GCC being used.

by Ramesh G on Feb 13, 2005 12:15 AMreply to Solutions from Mumbai. Knowing what Tally can do, know that Tally is not still technology wise sound enough to address *every* enterprise need and comparing it with SAP is like comparing an Ant with Elephant. But tally's success is mainly based on its simplicity and simplicity on long run is complexity. Addressing that complexity by having database, thin client or even multi client, multi O/S support will take Tally to the highest level. Tally is just stepping in to the technology world and i wish i can run Tally on my Linux Server with MySQL or PostGres and can securely give access to my employees through web.

by Amit Kumar on Feb 11, 2005 10:04 AMI think that this is a win-win situation for both Tally and RedHat(and linux in general) since there are hardly any professional accounting solutions available on linux and this will fill a void for RedHat while giving a head start to Tally, not only nationally but also internationally. My best wishes on this extremely well timed strategic decision.
