  • Sun Microsystems India has announced that based on IDC's Asia/Pacific Quarterly Enterprise Server Tracker Q4 2004, it has maintained its top position in the non-x86/Unix server market segment in India for the calendar year 2004.

Sun's non-x86 Unix revenues grew 32% year-on-year in 2004 compared with the overall market growth of 28%. It led by 67.9% in unit shipment share, which was 49.1 points higher than its closest competitor.

The company's non-x86/Unix server shipments grew 63% in CY 2004 compared with CY 2003. Sun also led the non-x86/Unix server market with a 47.4% revenue market share in CY 2004.

The non-x86/Unix server market consists of 64-bit EPIC and RISC architecture servers running a flavor of Unix.

In the Linux server market in India, Sun recorded a 546% growth in unit shipments and 716% surge in revenues in 2004 compared with 2003. Sun's strong growth in the Linux server market in India was being fuelled by its new line of x86 servers, namely the Sun Fire V20z and Sun Fire V40z.

"Sun has held our dominance in the India non-x86/Unix server market with significant gains in both unit shipment and revenue. This shows that Sun's systems continued to be favored by mission critical sectors such as telecommunications, financial services, service providers and manufacturing enterprises," said Bhaskar Pramanik, managing director, Sun Microsystems, India.
