Netcraft recently launched its anti-phishing toolbar, for Mozilla's Firefox browser. The toolbar apparently runs on any operating system supported by Firefox and displays the hosting location, country, longevity, popularity, and an abstracted risk rating for each site visited.
Netcraft claims that with the help of its toolbar, users can protect themselves from phishing attacks, view the hosting location and risk rating of every site they visit, thus help defend the Internet community from fraudsters.
Additionally, Netcraft's toolbar also traps suspicious URLs containing characters, which have no common purpose other than to deceive. It also defends against pop up windows, which attempt to hide the navigation controls and displays sites' hosting location, including country, thus helping users to evaluate fraudulent URLs (e.g. the real citibank.com or barclays.co.uk sites are unlikely to be hosted in the former Soviet Union).
Once the first recipients of a phishing mail have reported the target URL, it is blocked for community members as they subsequently access the URL. Widely disseminated attacks simply mean that the phishing attack will be reported and blocked sooner.
Netcraft's toolbar can be downloaded from here.
