Kemwell Goes The SAP Way
Ankush Sohoni
With growing business needs, and redundant systems, Kemwell, a pharmaceutical company, decided to implement mySAP ERP. Nanaiah M. C., GM-systems, Kemwell Pvt. Ltd. spoke to CXOtoday.com regarding the recent implementation of SAP’s ERP solution.
CXOtoday.com: What was the IT atmosphere in your organization prior to deploying an ERP?

Nanaiah M.C - Before we decided to take a major IT initiative, such as deploying SAP ERP, we had Foxpro based systems, which were developed in-house. Since we are growing quite well, we decided that it was time for us to implement a system that would enable us to create some sort of workflow system and organization, within our enterprise.

CXOtoday.com: When did you feel the need to implement an ERP?
Nanaiah M.C - As mentioned above, we were growing. We cater to some big clients, such as GSK, Johnson & Johnson, Lupin, Himlaya, etc. In order to keep a level of organization and transparency, with regards to our products, we decided that it was time to implement an ERP.
CXOtoday.com: Why did you choose SAP as your ERP vendor?
Nanaiah M.C - Before implementing SAP, we evaluated a few other vendors, which included Oracle, JDE and some others, however, the portfolio and experience that SAP brought to us was unmatchable.
CXOtoday.com: Did you experience any issues while implementing?
Nanaiah M.C - Yes. In fact we did experience a few issues with regards to our data integration. The master data in our legacy systems had to be cleaned and ported to excel sheets, and then it was transferred to the ERP. Apart from the data integration, we didn’t have any other issues as such.
CXOtoday.com: How long did you take to complete the entire implementation?
Nanaiah M.C - We started the project on September 16 2004, and we completed everything on the February 14 this year. We had a dedicated team of 17 people, 10 of which were from our enterprise, and the rest from our integrators, CVSIT.
CXOtoday.com: What kind of investments did you make for this project?
Nanaiah M.C - We spent approximately Rs 1.5 crore inclusive of hardware, software and training. We implemented all of the modules of mySAP ERP.
CXOtoday.com: What are your future IT initiatives?
Nanaiah M.C - We plan to implement SAP’s enterprise portal management tool, and are also planning to implement SAP’s HR and Payroll system.
CXOtoday.com: Are you satisfied with the performance of the ERP?
Nanaiah M.C - Yes definitely. We have made this investment and are very happy that we did what we did. We are already seeing better workflow and a much quicker response from our side to our customers. We are also very happy with the way CVSIT helped with our integration.
