75% of Yahoo staff don't use Yahoo Mail, reveals leaked memo

When Yahoo introduced an overhaul of Yahoo Mail this October, thousands of Yahoo Mail users freaked out on the matter. However, none were as annoyed as the Yahoo employees themselves! The fact is now out in the open! A hilariously leaked internal memo revealed that only 25% of Yahoo employees are using Yahoo Mail.

The memo, leaked by All Things Digital, was written by Jeff Bonforte, the senior VP of communications products at Yahoo, and Randy Roumillat, Yahoo’s CIO. The company admitted that it has failed in its effort to get employees to use Yahoo Mail as their corporate email account.

Where the problem lies

Ever since Yahoo Mail made an overhaul in its mail designs to celebrate its 16th birthday, users started to complain to Yahoo and posted about the problems they are facing in social media. While some believe that the key features of Yahoo Mail had been removed, others reported serious technical glitches.

A key issue with the new Yahoo Mail is that users can no longer organize their inboxes by tabs or sort by sender, and new emails aren’t displayed in bold. Others were unable to view mail folders without leaving the inbox, and there was not even a button to print. Yahoo Mail users have also reported a broken autosave function, missing email contacts and even self-deleting emails. Some complained that the new Yahoo Mail is very slow. The company received nearly 7000 complaints from users.

As only 25% staff of Yahoo started using the email service, it indicates that the new change did not go well with them. Analysts believe a lack of internal testing explains why the product was released with so many bugs and glitches. However, all seemed hush-hush until the memo was leaked the company senior managers.

Is it really time to move on …?

The email filled with humorous references and sarcastic remarks. The memo repeated that using Yahoo Mail will be good for the company as a whole, and frequently compared it to eating “dogfood.”

For example, it says: “First, it doesn’t feel like we are asking you to abandon some glorious place of communications nirvana. At this point in your life, Outlook may be familiar, which we can often confuse with productive or well-designed. Certainly, we can admire the application for its survival, an anachronism of the now defunct ’90s PC era, a pre-web program written at a time when NT Server terrorized the data-center landscape with the confidence of a T… There was a similar outcry when we moved away from Outlook’s suite-mates in the Microsoft Office dreadnaught. But whether it’s familiarity, laziness or simple stubbornness dressed in a cloak of Ayn Randian Objectivism, the time has come to move on, comrade!!!…”

According to the memo, Yahoo gives a list of reasons why Yahoo employees should use Yahoo Mail instead of Microsoft Outlook and even reveals a new feature coming soon to Yahoo Mail that they want the team to test: “smart auto-suggest” powered by Xobni, one of the company’s Yahoo acquired in July 2013.

Apart from lack of internal testing, analysts are startled as the memo concludes by stating that corporate mail is not supported with the Yahoo Mail app for Android or iOS. Employees will probably be much more likely to use Yahoo Mail if they could actually check their messages from their mobile device. They believe whether this could be a key reason why Yahoo stopped allowing employees to work from home?
