Cafe Coffee Day, India’s premier and largest chain of cafes and Microsense, provider of corporate solutions in the field of WAN has entered into a partnership that will enable Cafe Coffee Day customers to access Wi-Fi networks at several outlets across India.

Speaking to CXOtoday, N. V. Krishna, director, Microsense Pvt Ltd., said, “The Wi-Fi service will feature plug and play functionality apart from VPN support. The PIN allocated allows access for users from any of the cafe’s where the service has been enabled across India.”

Elaborating further he continued, “Microsense has developed a full-fledged authentication and billing platform, which supports roaming, pre-paid, and post-paid subscription plans, comprehensive management reporting and CRM. Since the solution has been designed and built for Wi-Fi applications, it already supports many installations and customers.

According to Krishna, the company is providing 256K or 512K at smaller hotspots and higher speeds for larger spots such as hotels (typically 1 MB, 2MB).

In terms of security, Krishna stated that being a public hot spot, the primary focus is to support users without them having to make any changes in their laptops/PDAs. Thus corporate users with VPN will have secure connectivity.

Currently the wireless protocol being used is 802.11b. By April the company will support other methods of security (802.11i). Users with their Wi-Fi configured for 802.11i/WPA will be supported as well as those who are configured for open connection.

“Basically we will provide the infrastructure for security, however, the level of security to some extent will still be dependent on the user,” clarified Krishna.

Microsense has already completed a national rollout of Wi-Fi services at 50 Cafe Coffee Day outlets in Bangalore, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Chennai.

According to Krishna, the five locations that are up in Mumbai are Malad, Mulund, Worli Sea Face, Shivaji Park and Charni Road. By March 2005, at least 100 Cafe Coffee Day outlets will be totally Wi-Fi enabled.
